1999년 2월 19일 금요일 오후 6시, 영국의 런던에 있는 임페리얼 칼리지(Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine)에서는 '삶이란 무엇인가?'라는 주제로 특별강연회가 열렸다.

임페리얼 칼리지에는 많은 외국인-영국인이 아닌 다른 나라 학생-들이 유학을 와서 수업을 받고 있었는데 강연장소인 소강당에 참석한 학생들 중에는 한국인 학생도 여러 명이 보였다.

강연회는 한국에서 초빙한 자연과학연구학회 회장의 제안설명을 듣고 학생들의 질문과 연사의 답변 그리고 토론하는 순서로 진행되었다.

제안설명 전문(提案說明全文)

·과학을 통해서 본 지구

우리는 언제부터 지구가 존재하게 되었는지에 대해서 아무도 모릅니다. 그리고 또 언제부터 지구에 생명체가 존재해 왔는지에 대해서도 알 수가 없습니다.

다만 있던 일을 통해서 확인한 바에 의하면, 세상은 하나의 원칙에 의해서 자신을 끝없이 존재하게 하는 일을 하고 있었습니다.

지금의 인류에서 최초로 깨달음을 얻었던 고타마 붓다는 이런 일을 보고 나서 "현상계를 통해서 본 좋고 나쁜 일들은 인연의 법에 의해서 생기게 되고, 한번 존재하게 된 것들이 끝없이 존재할 수 있는 것은 윤회에 의해서 있게 되는 일이다."라고 말했습니다.

이 말을 쉬운 말로 설명하자면 '모든 것들은 자기 속에 연결된 문제에 의해서 변화하게 되는 것이고, 한번 존재하게 된 것들은 특별한 사유가 없는 한 변화를 통해서 끝없이 반복하게 된다.'는 것입니다.

여러분도 이 일에 조금만 관심을 가지게 된다면 이런 일에 대해서 쉽게 이해할 수가 있게 될 것입니다.

지구가 어떻게 해서 오랜 세월을 인간과 함께 해 올 수 있었는지에 대해서 확인을 해 보겠습니다.

지구도 다른 현상계에 있는 것들과 마찬가지로 끝없이 반복되는 일을 하고 있습니다. 그렇지 않다면 지금과 같이 인간이 살 수 있는 환경을 항상 유지하는 일이 불가능하기 때문입니다.

어떻게 해서 그런 일이 가능할까요?

저 역시도 그런 일들에 대해서 알고 나서는 매우 놀라웠습니다.

세상은 주기적(週期的)으로 자체 내에 있던 일을 통해서 원점(原點)으로 되돌아가고 있었던 것입니다. 그것은 삽시간에 있던 일로써 인류의 찬란했던 문명은 흔적도 없이 사라지고 세상은 다시금 태초(太初)의 모습으로 돌아가 있었습니다.

지각 변동과 해일 현상, 지진과 화산 활동 등이 세상을 바꾸어 놓음으로써 인류의 모든 흔적을 사라지게 한 것입니다. 이러한 일로 인해서 지구에는 새로운 세상이 있게 되는 것입니다.

이런 일은 과거의 인류에게도 있었고, 미래의 인류에서도 있게 될 것입니다. 과학자들은 이런 일을 두고 변화기(變化期)라고 말합니다.

다시 말해서 변화기란 세상을 바꾸어 놓는 활동을 말합니다.

지금까지 세상에는 헤아릴 수 없이 많은 변화기가 있었습니다. 그럼으로써 지금까지 세상에는 생명체가 끊임없이 존재할 수가 있었습니다.

세상에는 이 변화기가 있을 때마다 항상 인간의 역할이 매우 중요시 되어왔습니다. 그렇기 때문에 지금까지 인류를 끝없이 이어지게 할 수 있었던 것입니다.

21세기는 변화기와 연결되어 있습니다.

그리고 이미 변화기의 징후가 나타나고 있을 것입니다. 이런 일들에 대해서는 우리들이 확인해 보아야 합니다. 우리들 중에는 많은 사람들이 변화기 이후의 새로운 인류로 이동을 해 갈 것입니다. 물론 그렇게 하지 못하는 사람도 많이 있을 것입니다만 결과는 문제를 통해서만 알 수 있습니다.

만일 여러분의 미래가 궁금하다면 자기 자신에게 있던 문제를 확인해보면 해답은 항상 문제 속에 있는 것을 알 수 있습니다.

자신을 바꾸고 싶은 사람이 있다면 자신 속에 있던 문제를 바꾸면 됩니다.

여러분은 이미 숫자를 알고 있고, 수학의 문제를 만들고 풀 수가 있기 때문에 조금만 세상일에 대해서 눈을 뜨게 된다면, 자기에게 있던 문제를 볼 수도 있고 그 문제를 풀 수도 있을 것입니다. 그렇게 되면 여러분은 자신을 지배하려 하고 있는 운명으로부터 벗어나 오히려 자신의 운명을 지배할 수도 있게 됩니다.

세상은 문제 속에 있는 법칙에 의해서 모든 일을 존재하게 하기 때문입니다.

지금까지 이런 일들이 인간 세계에 알려지지 않고 있었던 것은 인간들이 있는 일을 보면서도 있는 것들의 속에 있는 근원적인 일들을 알아 볼 수가 없었기 때문입니다. 그것은 숫자를 모르는 사람은 수학 문제를 보아도 그 문제를 알아 볼 수 없는 것과 같은 것입니다.

저 역시 여러분과 같은 입장이었을 때는 이런 일들에 대해서 관심조차 없었습니다. 그래서 저도 여러분의 입장을 잘 아는 것입니다.

사실상 이런 일들은 아무나 쉽게 알 수가 없는 것입니다. 그렇기 때문에 세상에는 아직도 이런 일들에 대해서 잘 알려지지 않고 있습니다.

세상의 일에 대해서 알 수 있는 능력을 가진 자는 지금의 인류에서 단 두 사람만이 태어났습니다.

한 사람은 3,000년 전에 인도에서 났던 고타마 붓다였으며 그는 세상의 일들을 존재하게 하던 근원의 세계에 대해서 볼 수가 있었습니다.

그러나 고타마 붓다가 변화기에 대해서 언급을 했는지 안 했는지는 정확하게 알 수가 없습니다. 다만 인간의 세계에서는 변화기에 대해서 어떤 것도 상세하게 알고 있지 않다는 것입니다.

그렇기 때문에 지금 세상에 전해지고 있는 말들은 몇 사람의 부정확한 예언(豫言)에 불과하며 그 예언들은 문제 속에 있는 일들에 대해 제대로 설명도 되지 않는 상태에서 문제를 풀어 줄 해답도 분명하지 않은 것입니다.

내가 이처럼 세계를 여행하고 있는 가장 중요한 점은 이제는 인간의 세계가 이런 일에 대해서 관심을 가져야 하고 확인을 해야 하기 때문입니다.

이런 일은 여러분 자신이나 세상의 앞날에 매우 중요한 일입니다.

여러분이 어떻게 나의 말을 믿어야 할 것인가 하는 점에 대해서 말하겠습니다.

오늘 이 시간에 여러분의 질문을 받고 제가 문제를 만들겠습니다. 그리고 그 문제를 여러분이 다시 확인해 보면 됩니다.

그리고 문제를 통해서 여러분이 가지고 있는 지적인 시각과 나의 시각을 서로 확인하고 맞추어 보는 것입니다.

그래서 여러분에게 질문을 할 수 있는 기회를 나에게 준다면 나는 여러분들이 가장 잘 알고 있는 부분에 대해서 몇 가지만 질문할 것입니다.

여러분 중에서 내가 질문하는 문제를 알고 그 문제에 대해서 답해 줄 사람이 과연 있게 될 것인지 궁금합니다. 만일 우리가 확실히 알지 못하는 일을 확인하지 않는다면 그 일은 우리를 다시 속이게 될 것입니다.

오늘날의 과학(科學)이 있는 일을 밝혀내고, 있는 일을 통해서 물질(物質)과 문명(文明)의 주인이 되었다 해서 사명을 다했다고 말할 수 없습니다.

과학이 인간의 삶 속에 있게 되는 일들에 대해서는 제대로 밝힌 것이 아무 것도 없는 것입니다.

내가 세계를 여행하고 여러분 앞에 나서야 하는 것은 바로 그 때문입니다.

나는 지금 인류의 길을 찾고 있습니다.
내가 찾고 있는 길은 바로 여러분 속에 있습니다.
그래서 나는 여러분 앞에서 세상의 일을 밝히려 하는 것입니다.
진리가 드러나면 누구나 세상의 일을 알게 됩니다.

그런데 이 일을 하는데는 아무도 도와주지 않고 대부분의 사람들은 이 일을 좋아하지 않았습니다.

그러나 나는 그들을 이해합니다. 많은 사람들이 나와 같지 않다는 것과, 그 사람들이 내 말을 들으면 진리 속에 있는 일을 알아보지 못하기 때문에 지루해 한다는 것을 나는 잘 알고 있습니다.

그렇지만 어떻게 하겠습니까?

나의 활동여하에 세상과 여러분의 앞날이 걸려 있습니다. 이 자리에 나와 함께 한국에서 온 몇 사람들은 자비로 경비를 부담해서 여러분과 나의 이러한 만남을 애써서 마련했습니다. 그렇다고 해서 이 사람들이 풍족한 생활을 하는 사람들은 아닙니다. 다만 이 일을 하지 않으면 안 된다는 것을 알았기 때문입니다.

여러분도 세상의 일에 대해서 조금이나마 알게 된다면 변하게 될 것입니다.

나는 나의 활동이 여러분의 삶에 진정한 도움이 될 수 있기를 바랍니다.

·The Earth Seen Through Science

Nobody knows since when the earth has existed. And nobody knows when it made creatures of life exist on itself.

However, according to what has existed the world makes itself exist endlessly on the basis of a principle.

Gautama Buddha who attained the supreme enlightenment for the first time in the present mankind said as follows after observing such things as stated just before, "Something good or bad observed through the system of phenomenon takes place on the basis of the law of 'providence'. The existence of the phenomenon that something once created exists perpetually is possible by Reincarnation."

Let me explain what he said. Everything changes depending on the matters connected to something in it. And things once made to exist, repeat themselves endlessly through changes as long as special reasons do not happen. If you have even a little interest, you can also understand very easily what I said.

These facts let us know the fact that the earth repeats itself endlessly in the same way as other things in the system of phenomenon do.

If it is not true, it is impossible for the earth to have the present circumstances where human beings can live.

How is it possible? I was very surprised to know the phenomenon.

Then, let's confirm how the earth has been able to stay with human beings for such a long time. The world comes back to the original point periodically through what has happened in itself. It happens for an instant. The glorious civilization disappears without trace and the world changes back to the figure of the beginning of the world.

The movements of the earth's crust. The phenomenon of a huge tidal wave by a seismic shock, earthquakes and the activities of volcanoes extinguish all traces. Through the very activities, a new world comes into being. These kinds of activities change the world.

This event arose past mankind and will also occur to mankind in the future.

Scientist call this event a 'Changing Period'.

A 'Changing Period' means the activities which change the world. There have been countless changing periods in the world.

That is why creatures of life have been able to survive eternally in the world. Whenever a changing period occurs, human beings have crucial roles. The roles have made it possible for mankind to survive endlessly.

A changing period will be in the 21st century.

Some indications might happen already. They will have to be verified. A number of people among us will move to new mankind. There will be someone who cannot do so. But the results can only be known through causes. If you are curious about your future, please confirm what kinds of problems you have. The answers always lie in questions.

If you want to change yourself, you can so by changing questions in you.

You must know the numbers. You can make mathematical questions and solve them. In the same way, if you open your eyes a little bit to things of the world, you can recognize your own questions and solve them as well. If then, you can free from the destiny which is eager to control you, and finally you will be able to control your destiny.

The reason why I tell you these facts is that the world makes everything exist on the basis of the principle which lies in questions.

These things have not been known to the human world so far. It is because human beings have not been able to recognize the essential things in 'what is', in spite of observing it. This is the same principle as you do not understand what questions in mathematics mean in spite of looking at them when you can not count the numbers.

When I was in the same situation as yours, I did not have even interest in what I have talked about here. That is why I understand your position.

Nobody can understand the facts easily. This is the very reason why they have not been known to you yet.

There have been two people who were born and had the ability to understand things of the world in the present mankind.

Gautama Buddha born in India 3,000 years ago saw the world of essence which made things of the world exist.

However, the fact that he had explained about a changing period has not been confirmed yet. What we know is that nobody has explained about a changing period in detail.

Some prophecies about a changing period have come down. They have been made by a few prophets.

Those prophecies do not explain about things in questions and do not give obvious solutions which can solve the questions either.

One of the most important reasons that I travel around the world is that I believe that all of you should also confirm what a changing period is like with interest.

It is very precious to you and the world in the future to do so.

Then let me talk about how you can believe what I said.

Here is the answer. First, I will make problems through your questions. And then you can confirm what the problems are like. This may help you to understand what I have told.

Second, it will be good to tell the difference between your intellectual sight and my sight through matters.

Third, if I can have some chances to ask, I will ask a few questions about some of the teachings which are the most popular in your community.

I wonder who among you can understand the question which I ask and answer it. If we do not confirm what something which you are unaware of is like, it will deceive us again in the future.

Disclosure of what is and becoming the owner of material or civilization do not cover all aspects of science.

Today's science has not revealed anything in human beings' lives correctly.

For this reason, I am travelling around the world.

I am searching for the way of mankind.

The very way which I am looking for lies in you.

That is why I try to reveal things of the world in front of you.

When truth comes out everybody can understand things of the world.

However, when I have tried to do this work, nobody has helped me and people who I have met did not like it.

I understand the reason why the reality was like that. It is because you are not the same as me and you cannot recognize things in truth even though you listen to what I say. As soon as you meet me you get bored.

But what else can I do?

The future of the world and you is up to my activities. People who are here together with me are trying to provide some chances of meeting between you and me with their own expenses. The reason why they do like that is that they learned what love is.

If you can open your eyes to things of the world you can change yourself.

I hope that my activities can be helpful to your life.

강연시간 동안 학생들은 줄기차게 질문을 했다. 간간이 폭소가 터지는 속에서도 토론은 진지하게 이어졌다. 1시간 30분간의 강연 예정시간을 훨씬 넘겨서 끝난 이후에도 참석자중에서 몇 학생이 더 질문할 것이 있다고 해서 로비의 소파에서 40분 정도 더 대화를 나누고 헤어졌다. 자신의 일에 대해서 알고자 노력하는 사람들에게 좋은 결과가 있기를 바란다.
